A Taste of Seafood in Richmond

During a recent visit to the wharf, I spoke with local fisherman Reid Thornton of Steveston Spot Prawns and Seafood, a family-operated business that has been serving customers at the wharf for more than a decade. Founded by Justin Taylor, whose family has deep roots in the fishing industry, the company specializes in harvesting fresh seafood from local BC waters, with live spot prawns and wild sockeye salmon among its most sought-after products.

What sets their operation apart is the care they take in handling live seafood. Using a specialized chilling system that closely mimics the prawns’ natural environment, they ensure the product remains exceptionally fresh from the moment it is caught until it reaches customers.

The annual spot prawn season runs from mid-May to mid-June, making it one of the shortest and most celebrated seafood seasons of the year. Visitors are encouraged to arrive early, bring a small cooler with ice, and enjoy some of the freshest seafood available anywhere on the West Coast.

Beyond the seafood itself, Reid credits the success of the business to the strong community spirit that defines Steveston. Born and raised in the village, he values the area's connection to the water, its rich fishing history, and the loyal customers who return year after year.

Whether you're a Richmond resident or visiting for the first time, a trip to Steveston during spot prawn season offers a unique opportunity to experience one of the city's most authentic waterfront traditions. With fishing boats lining the harbour, local seafood vendors on the docks, and the charm of the historic village all around, it's a Richmond experience not to be missed.
